First-time trainee specialist
Lance Carter completed his first IRONMAN at Vineman in 1993—woefully underprepared but full of determination. At the time, triathlon coaching didn’t exist, so he pieced together his training plan using articles from Triathlon Magazine. That race ignited a deep passion to learn the science of endurance training. Three years later, he returned to Vineman and achieved a personal best of 10:18—a testament to his growing expertise and commitment.
In 2000, Lance turned his passion into purpose, helping launch the first triathlon coaching program for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Washington/Alaska Chapter. Since then, he has coached hundreds of athletes—many first-timers—across all levels, from 5Ks to IRONMANs and Boston qualifiers. He has served as a Team in Training coach annually since 2001.
Lance is certified by USA Triathlon (Level I), USATF, and U.S. Masters Swimming. He’s completed 9 IRONMANs, over 40 Half-IRONMANs (PR 4:50), and 7 marathons (PR 3:09).
He’s also a former wetsuit designer for Blueseventy, the author of two books on the mental side of triathlon, a melanoma survivor, and former owner of Everyday Athlete in Kirkland, WA.
Lance brings more than two decades of coaching experience and lives by his simple philosophy: believe in athletes more than they believe in themselves—until they do.
